When we think of our wonderful Nude lifestyle we generally associate this with visits to clubs or resorts. There are however, thousands of beaches around the world where people enjoy the freedom of Nude recreation in a truly natural environment. Moreover, the establishment of Nude beaches usually precedes the clubs and associations in any country. Most Nude beaches have to be carved out of a hostile social landscape and continuously guarded by dedicated groups of Naturists - although some enjoy substantial public support. The Beaches of Brazil
Brazil has a huge coastline which has literally thousands of absolutely wonderful tropical beaches. Furthermore, it starts in the hot equatorial region and continues thousands of miles south to much more temperate areas, making the beaches quite different. Not too surprisingly, many of them are Naturist. But Naturism here is a bit different than you will find in other parts of the world, so besides their sheer beauty, Brazilian Naturist beaches are really quite unique. Come along with us as we take a look at 4 of these wonderful yet quite different beaches.

In this 2 part essay John Sperling addresses one of the most perplexing issues of most Naturists and Nudists. We all understand that there are pressing reasons to wear clothing and protective gear in some areas and for some tasks. We at Virtually Magazine for example, are located in eastern Ontario Canada, and we know all too well that during the winter, heavy clothing is absolutely essential - without it we would die. But almost all societies have adopted the practice of wearing clothing, even when it is 'clearly' unnecessary. Public Nudity is considered offensive and even illegal in almost all counties today. Even when confronted with mounting evidence that Nudity is not only harmless, but beneficial to normal development, modern society continues to treat the mere image of the human body with utter contempt. John presents one of the many explanations for this body shame that so profoundly effects us all.

Virtually Magazine visits this really amazing Naturist complex. Along the same lines as Cap d'Agde in France, but not quite as big, this is not simply a beach but a whole community complete with a major hotel, 2 condominium complexes, a Naturist club, stores and shops, and 8 kilometers of Nude beach along the Mediterranean coast. The climate is ideally suited for Naturism here, and by climate we don't just mean the perfect weather. In Vera, Naturism gets the open blessing and financial support of the local politicians and authorities. A refreshing change from other more restricted North American countries.

If Wreck beach is typical of North American Naturist beaches, haulover is an exception. While the South Florida Free Beaches association has had to be very concerned about stupid anti-Nudity laws being passed, this beach has survived pretty much unscathed. It is a major beach in a heavily populated area, with easy access, a parking lot within easy walking distance of the beach, and has the usual amenities since it is parkland overseen by the county. It is also the only legal clothing-optional beach in Florida. While we should not take it for granted, Haulover is one of the few success stories we read about these days.

For this article Robbert traveled to probably one of the most unlikely places on earth to find a Nude beach. While the people here don't have to concern themselves with the fanatical conservative attitudes towards the human body so prevalent in the west, they do have to deal with another very serious threat to their Naturist lifestyle - the climate. Luckily though, it is not so much the temperature that is the problem, since it does actually get pretty hot in Siberia, but the short duration of the summer. People here therefore, are very dedicated, and when the warm weather does arrive, they take full advantage of it.

Wreck Beach is one of North America's great Naturist beaches and in many ways is typical. It grew spontaneously out of the 1960's hippy era, got a foothold and managed to avoid the catastrophic attacks by the mainstream authorities, largely because of its location (below the University of BC campus) and its difficult access (300 foot cliffs.) They now enjoy a legal status, but this has been hard fought for over the years by the 'Wreck Beach Preservation Society' headed by Judy Williams. There are still however, many threats which have the potential of destroying the fragile Naturist status of this beach, so the WBPS and the beachgoers remain constantly vigilant. Compared with other Naturist beaches, there are few facilities at this typical west coast beach; it is the tremendous following that makes it great. On a hot summer day, Wreck beach can draw crowds of up to 5,000 friendly family Naturists, from all across North America.
